I LOVED THIS BOOK! (Sorry for shouting). I thought this book was going to be the usual thriller with cardboard characters and the predictable "doomsday is coming, everyone save yourselves!" trope. Not at all! There is evidently a genetically engineered virus affecting people in Los Angeles, but that is a subplot in this particular book. The main character, Mason is a protection agent and former Marine who has a wife, Beth, who is a vet in a corporate-owned zoo as well as a teenage daughter, Theresa. There are several intersecting plots in this book, including flashbacks to Mason's service in Iraq in 2004, which helps explain why he is so protective of his buddy's son, Elio. I read this book in one sitting, and it kept me riveted to every page. I does have a little bit of a cliffhanger ending, BUT it didn't ruin the whole book for me as it usually does. I did sign up for the author's website, (which I never do) because he said he is feverishly working on the sequel, which I will get the minute it comes out. I will even pay for it, even though I generally get free books because I'm on a fixed income. You won't go wrong getting this bookProduct details

The Last Day A PostApocalyptic Survival Thriller Edge of Survival Book 1 edition by William Oday Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The storyline has a really good pace and enough surprises to keep you on your toes. The characters are believable and you get invested in them. The writing sometimes feels like a bandaid has been ripped off, but it is so good.
I have been hooked on ZA books for about two years now. There are several fantastic authors, such as W.J. Lundy, Glynn James & Michael Steven Fuchs, Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Mark Tufo, Sam Sisavath, L.T. Ryan, Rachel Aukes, Dirk Patton. William Oday's book is right up there. The book is fantastic, clearly written by a talented author, engrossing and engaging. I look forward to Book 2 anxiously!
WO has written a story line about the end of civilization as we know it. The USG decides there as e to many people in the world. A secret meeting is set up with world leaders. They agree with the concept and plans are made to exterminate 95% of the population. There are different factions that cross paths and the strongest survives. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
I wanted to like this book, but it just wasn't happening for me - I got half-way through before putting it down. I liked the characters well enough, but the world and everything happening in it just didn't make sense. There were things that felt forced - for example, certain characters end up in the same place at the same time without a good believable reason as to why (Elio and Mason for example, or Mason, the gang leader, AND a super model's ex-boyfriend that Mason just happened to be charged to protect). Also, Mason (established as the former Marine "good guy") does something that seems out of character involving leaving the scene of a crime, and then the police response is completely unbelievable.
I don't think I'll be returning to this author. I'd recommend something by Hugh Howey to get your post-apocalyptic fix.
I loved this book! It was well written, the plot was developed, the characters were relatable and the story kept me captivated. And the twists! So many of the books I've read lately have been predictable. This book was anything but predictable, which kept my attention. So what else do you get in this book? You get suspense, danger, intrigue, death and destruction. Oh, and there's true love! I immediately downloaded the next book and can't wait to get started! I'll definitely be reading more from William Oday.
Mason, a former Marine sergeant who saw the worst of war at ground level in the Middle East, works part-time as a personal protector. A friend and former subordinate of his hands him a hated job in short order, just as his personal life gets yanked into high danger. The flashbacks explain his mental state; the beginning shows the horror the government is about to unleash on the public. Mason and his family are caught in the middle.
This story gives the reader no mercy from page one. And now I’m impatient to read book two!
I started reading this book yesterday afternoon and read non-stop until late into the night. I picked it up again this morning and I finished it a few hours later. Author William Oday's writing made this possible. It's great. Simply great. The world building, the character development, the dialog, the increasing suspense, and the plot are flawless. The basic plot is fairly simple, but is made deliciously complex by the backstories of the well-drawn characters. They make decisions that I would never make in these situations, but are true to the characters. There are deaths along the way that always provoked a strong emotional reaction from me (even the bad guys). I love books that get me involved emotionally. It has been a long time since I have become so immersed in a book. Thank you so much, William Oday. You have joined my list of favorite authors.
One last point This is the first book in a series and I was somewhat wary that the ending would leave me feeling unsatisfied. It didn't. It was satisfying as an ending, but also made me more eager than ever to continue with the series.
